Fat Guy's Fat Guy of the Week

This story is a perfect time to introduce a new tradition on this website - whenever the opportunity presents itself I will be awarding somebody the Fat Guy's Fat Guy of the Week Award (disclaimer: there might not be a winner every week).

More often than not, the winner will have nothing to do with Atlanta sports, but if you've read the SportsSkinny's tagline - "the quick & narrow update on the world of Atlanta Sports from a not-so-narrow & not-so-quick guy" - then you'll understand that I feel an obligation and duty to my wide-set brethren in the world of sports. I'm not the hero Fat Guys need, I'm the hero Fat Guys deserve.

Last week's winner: Rex Ryan

Not too long ago, Sexy Rexy was the largest head coach in the league when he was first hired with the Jets. Fat Rex engineered a punishing Jets defense that was good enough to get Mark Sanchez to the AFC championship game TWICE. After his weight became a concern to his health, he opted for a lap band operation to drop some pounds.

Skinny Rex was not the same coach. He eventually lost his job in New York City but moved to upstate New York in the division to coach the Buffalo Bills. His first season wasn't great, they missed the playoffs once again with a talented roster. Ryan's twin brother, Rob, was relieved of his duties as Saints defensive coordinator - but hired this offseason as an assistant head coach.

Rob Ryan, who you may remember Rex made fun of in a press conference for being fatter (see below), never opted for the lap band surgery and has embraced the fat guy football coach look throughout his career.

Since Rob joined the Bills sideline, an ESPN profile on the brothers revealed that Rex gained 30 pounds. When I first heard this story, I thought about pregnant women and their partners gaining sympathy weight - but this might have just been a sign that deep down, Rex was just meant to be a fat guy.

Last week Rex's fat guy story got even better. After losing to the Ravens in week one it was time for Rex to change things up. The following graph is from ProFootballTalk.com, and I don't think there's ever been a better fat guy moment in the history of coaching in the NFL:

The Bills head coach told Mark Cannizaro of the New York Post that he had his band removed in a show of solidarity with his brother while also mentioning that his record was better in his heftier days.

I'm putting words in Rex's mouth here, but I can imagine him having this conversation with himself: "Hey Rex, coaching has been much harder since you lost all that weight, you've had fun as a skinny guy, it's been overrated....yeah it's time for the real Sexy Rexy to flex his gut."

On the hot congrats on the weight gain coach Ryan - speaking on behalf of fat guy football guys all across the country, we're glad to have you back.
